Mother’s Day in Whitby

Mother’s Day is the perfect excuse to slow down, spend quality time together, and show Mum just how much she means to you. If you’re looking for a thoughtful day out, Whitby offers the ideal mix of seaside charm, delicious food, and unforgettable views.

There’s something magical about Whitby in the morning. The fresh sea air, the sound of the waves, and the peaceful atmosphere make it the perfect place to start a special day.

Take a walk

Take a gentle stroll along Whitby Beach or wander along the pier towards the lighthouse. If Mum enjoys a scenic walk, you can follow part of the Cleveland Way coastal path for breathtaking views across the North Sea.

Don’t forget to stop for a few photos – the coastline here is one of the most picturesque in Yorkshire.

Visit the famous Whitby Abbey

No visit to Whitby is complete without seeing the magnificent Whitby Abbey.

Perched high above the town, these atmospheric ruins inspired parts of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and offer spectacular views across Whitby harbour. Climb the famous 199 Steps from the old town to reach the abbey and enjoy one of the most iconic viewpoints in Yorkshire.

It’s a memorable moment to share together — and one Mum will never forget.

A perfect lunch

Mother’s Day is the perfect excuse to indulge in Whitby’s famous food scene.

A visit to Hetty & Betty is almost a tradition when in town. Known for its award-winning fish and chips afternoon tea, it’s a must-visit spot overlooking the harbour.

If Mum prefers something sweeter,  you can enjoy our traditional afternoon tea with homemade cakes, scones, and Yorkshire Tea!

Explore Whitby’s fabulous independent shops

After lunch, wander through Whitby’s town. The streets are filled with independent shops selling everything from handmade gifts to local crafts.

Whitby is especially famous for Whitby Jet jewellery, a beautiful black gemstone that became popular in Victorian times. A piece of jet jewellery can make a unique and meaningful Mother’s Day gift.

On Baxtergate you can find K&S Dryden for gloves and hats, Thornton & Collins for bags and home decor, and Loafers for the perfect shoes!

End the day with a harbour sunset

Before heading home, take a peaceful evening stroll along the harbour. As the sun sets over the town and lights begin to glow across the water, Whitby becomes even more magical.

It’s the perfect way to end a relaxing Mother’s Day — with beautiful views, great memories, and time well spent together.
