Hidden Gems of Whitby
Whitby is home to so many famous landmarks, such as the iconic Whitby Abbey, but there are also lots of hidden gems.
Take a walk off the beaten track and discover somewhere new!
Keyhole Tunnel
Sometimes known as the “screaming tunnel”, this lesser known landmark is hidden up on the west cliff.
When looking through the whalebones towards the Abbey, if you look to the right, you will see a grassy embankment. Hidden here is the Keyhole Tunnel, gaining its name because of the shape of the entrance. The tunnel is quite long and has great acoustics, so a scream can get quite loud – hence its other name!
The tunnel provides a perfectly framed view of St Mary’s Church and the Abbey. This is thought to be the inspiration for Alice in Wonderland, during one of Lewis Carroll’s visits to Whitby.
Pannet Park
Situated just a short walk from the town centre, Pannet Park is home to the Whitby Museum and Art Gallery. It is also has a lovely children’s themed play area.
In Pannet Park you can find the floral clock, which was originally installed in 1953 to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on June 2nd 1953.
Unfortunately by 1979 the clock had fallen into disrepair, its hands were removed and the planting reverted to a normal flowerbed. It remained like this for 27 years until in 2006 the Friends of Pannett Park secured grants and sponsorship to reinstate the clock, create the Whitby Time Line, and carry out landscaping improvements to the surrounds.

The Cinder Track
Stretching between Whitby and Scarborough along the old railway line, the Cinder Track is one of North Yorkshire’s most beloved trails. Whether you’re a casual walker, an enthusiastic cyclist, a dog owner, or simply someone who loves the outdoors, the Cinder Track offers a peaceful escape with big views, rich heritage, and a surprising sense of adventure.
Once the route of the Whitby–Scarborough railway, the track retains its gentle gradients and sweeping curves—perfect for exploring the coast without battling steep hills. And best of all, you can start your journey right in Whitby.
