Whitby Krampus Run 2025
Every first weekend in December, mischief and magic comes to Whitby, dressed in hooves and horns! Celebrating its 11th year, the Whitby Krampus Run 2025 didn’t disappoint.
With colourful characters and drums galore the processions of Krampusse started their journey outside Hetty & Betty. And we welcomed our Krampus friends inside too, for well earned rest and refreshing drinks.
Krampus is a creature from Alpine folklore—half goat, half demon—who traditionally accompanies St. Nicholas during the Christmas season. While St. Nick rewards well-behaved children, Krampus is said to punish the naughty ones.
Dozens of costumed participants take part, dressed in elaborate handmade outfits featuring fur, masks, horns, bones, bells, chains, and glowing eyes. The creativity on display is astonishing, from traditional Alpine-style costumes to entirely unique interpretations of winter spirits, woodland creatures, and folkloric monsters.
As drums thunder and bells clang, the procession moves through the narrow streets, startling delighted spectators and creating a winter ritual atmosphere that feels both ancient and festive.
What sets the Whitby Krampus Run apart is its community spirit. The event is free to attend and entirely volunteer-driven, with participants dedicating time and creative energy year-round. It’s not just a parade—it’s a celebration of artistry, folklore, and local culture, raising much needed funds for deserving local charities.
