Our guide to What’s On during February Half Term

After the dark long nights of January, February is when we all start to venture outdoors again, taking in the bright winter sun, and cool, fresh air. There’s plenty to do to keep our little tribe entertained. We’ve put together some helpful ideas and events from Whitby and the surrounding areas.

Now usually we’d recommend a trip to Whitby Abbey,  the stunning ruins of the former residence of monks and nuns, and of the course the inspiration to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, but the Abbey is undergoing a £1.6 million transformation, (and we can’t wait to see the result), so it is closed until March 2019.

But don’t worry, there’s still plenty going on!

Steampunk Weekend The Whitby Steampunk Weekend is a celebration of all things Steampunk. As Whitby comes alive with colourful characters, fabulous outfits and alternative entertainment, it’s truly an experience. Visit Whitby Pavilion to browse the fabulous stalls and events, then head into town for your fish and chips! If you fancy something different, why not book in for our Afternoon Steam Tea? The Steampunk Weekend takes places 9th and 10th February.

Star spotting at Ravenscar The lack of pollution over the Yorkshire Coast makes it the perfect spot for star gazing. Expert astronomers will be on hand to offer advice, hints and tips on spotting and identifying the stars of the night sky. The Stars in the Sky event takes place on 22nd February and booking is essential.

Coastival Held across Scarborough, this wonderful Arts festival is celebrating its 10th year this year, and is set to be better than ever! With the theme of “time” it’s set to be a great event. The Family Hub at Coastival takes place on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th February. From Harbour Tales with stories, music and puppetry, to 3D time travel artwork there’s something to keep the whole family entertained!

Runswick Bay Fossil Hunting Explore the Jurassic history of the Yorkshire coast as you discover the hidden fossils  formed millions of years ago. Make sure you bring your wellies! The event takes place on 25th February. There is a charge for the event, click here for more details.

Whitby Rocks  This is a great initiative that you can join in anytime! Painted rocks are hidden all over the town. If you find one, post it to the Whitby Rocks Facebook page, and re-hide it! You can paint your own rocks for people to find too. A great activity for a rainy day!
